One sits behind your last molar on each side of the upper jaw. Another does the same on the lower jaw. If all four come through, they become the final set of adult teeth you’ll ever get.

Most people don’t spend much time thinking about them until something starts hurting. Fair enough. They stay hidden under the gums for years, quietly developing where you can’t even see them.

Why They’re So Far Back

Your wisdom teeth are the third molars. They’re designed to appear after every other permanent tooth has already settled into place. That means they don’t have much room left to work with, which explains why they often become a problem.

Years ago, people had larger jaws and tougher diets. Those extra molars made more sense back then. I think evolution just hasn’t caught up with modern mouths. We don’t really need that extra chewing power anymore.

They Start Growing Earlier Than You Think

Even though wisdom teeth usually appear between the late teenage years and the mid twenties, the teeth actually begin forming much earlier. Their roots develop inside the jawbone long before you notice anything.

Because they’re buried under the gums for so long, you won’t know where they are just by looking in the mirror. A dentist spots them with an X-ray, even if they haven’t started moving yet.

What Happens If There’s No Space?

This is where things get interesting. If your jaw has enough room, the wisdom teeth can grow straight up and work like normal molars. Plenty of people never have issues.

But a lot of jaws simply don’t leave enough space. So the tooth pushes against the one in front of it. Sometimes it stays trapped under the gum. Other times it comes through only halfway, which is annoying because food gets stuck around it far too easily.

• A little pressure in the back of your mouth. People often notice this before they see an actual tooth.

• Swollen gums are common, especially around one corner where the tooth keeps trying to break through.

• Bad breath can show up too, and brushing back there feels awkward for a while.

• Sometimes nothing hurts at all. An X-ray ends up telling the whole story.

Dental Implant Services in Popular Locations

Dental Implants in Isleworth Dental Implants in Brentford Dental Implants in Ealing Dental Implants in Feltham Dental Implants in Hounslow Dental Implants in Richmond Dental Implants in Southall Dental Implants in Twickenham

Wisdom teeth grow at the very back of your mouth.
