Fair enough. They get blamed a lot. Tonsils are two small lumps of tissue that sit at the back of your throat, one on each side. They are part of your body’s immune system and they help your body notice germs that enter through your mouth or nose.

The funny thing is that tonsils are useful, but people often think of them as troublemakers. That reputation comes from the times they get swollen or infected.

Where Tonsils Fit in Your Body

Your tonsils are located behind your mouth, near the opening of your throat. They are made of soft tissue that contains immune cells. Those cells react when they spot things that don’t belong there. Think of them as early guards near one of your body’s entry points.

And they are not the only tonsil tissue you have. There is another area of immune tissue higher up behind the nose. Most people never think about it unless a doctor brings it up. The name “tonsils” usually means the two that you can see when you open your mouth wide.

What They Actually Do

Tonsils help your immune system learn about certain germs. They catch tiny clues from things that enter your body. Over time, your immune system gets better at recognizing threats.

• A little defense station in your throat, which sounds more dramatic than it looks when you check in a mirror.

• They react to unwanted visitors. This is why your tonsils sometimes swell after your body starts fighting an infection.

• Not something you need to think about every day. Honestly, that is the nice part because they usually work quietly.

When Tonsils Become a Problem

The most common issue is tonsillitis, which means the tonsils become inflamed. A virus often causes it, though bacteria can be responsible too. Your throat might hurt. Your tonsils may look red or larger than usual.

Living With Your Tonsils

Most people keep their tonsils forever and never give them much thought. That’s a good thing. Your body has plenty of background work happening that you don’t notice.

Dental Implant Services in Popular Locations

Dental Implants in Isleworth Dental Implants in Brentford Dental Implants in Ealing Dental Implants in Feltham Dental Implants in Hounslow Dental Implants in Richmond Dental Implants in Southall Dental Implants in Twickenham

You probably know tonsils because someone once blamed them for a sore throat.
