Most of the time a cavity has been quietly eating away at it for weeks or months. Then you bite into something that isn’t even that hard and suddenly part of the tooth is gone. It feels strange. Your tongue won’t stop finding the rough edge, either.

The first few hours matter

• Cold drinks suddenly hurt. That’s a clue the inside of the tooth isn’t as protected anymore.

• If you found the broken piece, keep it. Sometimes it isn’t useful, still your dentist will want to see what came off.

• Soft food for a day or two, because crunchy snacks have a way of finding the exact sore spot.

• Pain medicine from the pharmacy is fine if you normally take it safely, though it won’t fix the reason the tooth broke.

What the dentist usually does

The treatment depends on how much of the tooth is left. A small break often gets repaired with a filling or bonded material that blends in pretty well. If the damage goes deeper then a crown may be the better answer because the remaining tooth needs real support.

Sometimes the cavity reaches the nerve. Then a root canal becomes the right move before the tooth is sealed with a crown. That sounds intimidating. Most people end up saying the waiting beforehand felt worse than the appointment itself.

Don’t try to patch it yourself

You’ll see videos showing homemade fixes. Skip them. They look convincing for thirty seconds and then you’re left with a bigger problem hiding underneath. A temporary dental repair kit from a pharmacy is different if you absolutely need to cover a sharp edge until your appointment, but it’s only buying a little time.

You’ll probably remember this bite forever

After the tooth is treated, brushing doesn’t feel like such an annoying chore anymore. Funny how one painful surprise changes your habits faster than a hundred reminders ever could.

That sharp little crack changes everything A tooth doesn’t usually snap out of nowhere.
