A blood clot forms over the graft site, and that little clot protects everything underneath. If it gets disturbed, healing becomes harder than it needs to be. That’s the part worth respecting.

Because hot drinks increase blood flow, they can encourage fresh bleeding. Coffee also dries your mouth out a bit, especially if you drink it all morning without much water. Neither of those things helps right after oral surgery.

So Is Coffee Completely Off Limits?

If your dentist told you to avoid hot drinks for 48 hours, follow that advice over anything you read online. Every graft is a little different, and the size of the procedure matters.

What About Food?

• Scrambled eggs work well, and they don’t ask much from your mouth.

• Yogurt is easy to eat, though keep it plain if flavored kinds sting a little.

• Mashed potatoes. Comfort food counts for something after dental work.

• Soup is fine once it isn’t steaming hot, which is the part people sometimes forget.

A Couple of Things I’d Avoid Too

Keep brushing the rest of your teeth unless your dentist says otherwise, but stay gentle near the surgical area. And don’t poke the graft with your tongue every few minutes. Everyone does it at first. It never helps.

Pain that slowly improves is expected. Swelling for a couple of days is pretty normal too. But if bleeding won’t stop, the pain suddenly gets much worse, or you notice signs of infection like pus or a bad smell, call your dentist instead of waiting it out.

Dental Implant Services in Popular Locations

Dental Implants in Isleworth Dental Implants in Brentford Dental Implants in Ealing Dental Implants in Feltham Dental Implants in Hounslow Dental Implants in Richmond Dental Implants in Southall Dental Implants in Twickenham

Why the First 24 Hours Matter Your mouth is busy healing even if it doesn’t feel dramatic yet.
