The bone needs pressure from the tooth root to stay strong. Once the tooth is gone the bone no longer has that job. So it starts to lose some of its width and height over time.

This process happens slowly. Two years gives plenty of time for this to happen.. The amount of bone loss varies from person to person. Some people still have bone left to support an implant without extra steps. Others may need work done before they can get one.

Your Dentist Will Check the Bone

The first step is usually an exam. Your dentist will look at the gum tissue. The empty space where the tooth used to be. A scan helps them see how much bone is actually there. This view is much clearer than looking with the eyes.

• Even if the gum looks healthy the bone underneath might not be ready for an implant.

• If the bone has shrunk a bone graft might be needed before placing the implant. That adds healing time to the treatment.

• Nearby teeth can also shift into the gap. If they have moved your dentist may need to move them into place to open up enough room.

Can You Still Get an Implant After Bone Loss?

Yes you can still get an implant even if bone loss has occurred. Waiting two years does not mean you’ve missed your chance.

If the bone isn’t strong enough to hold the implant your dentist can use a bone graft to rebuild the area. This takes time to heal.. Once the new bone is ready the implant can be placed. It adds time. The end result is still possible.

So Is Two Years Too Long?

No. Two years is not too long for getting an implant. You can still qualify.. Your dentist must check the bone, the gums and the space around the missing tooth. Then can they decide what steps are needed.

Dental Implant Services in Popular Locations

Dental Implants in Isleworth Dental Implants in Brentford Dental Implants in Ealing Dental Implants in Feltham Dental Implants in Hounslow Dental Implants in Richmond Dental Implants in Southall Dental Implants in Twickenham

What Happens After a Tooth Has Been Missing?
