Tooth decay is a reason. A crack or fracture is another reason, especially when the damage spreads through a part of the premolar.

Sometimes a premolar has already had a root canal. In that case the crown protects the remaining structure of the premolar from the pressure it faces while chewing. The exact approach depends on how healthy premolar remains and where the damage sits.

Damage Changes the Decision

• A small filling might be enough when most of the premolar is still strong. There is no reason to cover the whole premolar.

• Cracks are different. If a large section of the premolar has broken away a crown gives the remaining premolar an outer layer.

• After a root canal the premolar needs protection because the remaining structure of the premolar has already been weakened by the treatment.

What Happens During a Premolar Crown Procedure?

The first appointment usually starts with an examination. I will tell you that your dentist may take an X-ray to check the premolar and the area around its roots. If there is an infection that must be dealt with before the crown is placed.

Once the premolar is ready the dentist reshapes the premolar so the crown has room to sit over it properly. I will assure you that you will not feel the reshaping because the area is numbed first. After that an impression or digital scan is taken so the crown can be made to fit your bite.

How It Should Feel Afterwards

Your new crown may feel strange at first. I will say that your tongue will probably keep checking the crown because tonguesre annoyingly good at finding anything unfamiliar.

Mild sensitivity around the premolar can happen after treatment especially if the premolar was already irritated. It should settle. If you have pain when biting or the discomfort keeps getting worse I advise you to go back to your dentist instead of waiting it out.

Looking After a Premolar Crown

A crowned premolar still needs dental care. The crown itself will not develop a cavity. The natural premolar underneath can. The gum around the premolar also needs care.

• Brush around the crown carefully especially where the crown meets the gum. That is the bit people tend to rush.

• Flossing matters because food can collect around the edges of the crown even when everything looks perfectly clean from the outside.

• Do not use the crown as a bottle opener. Decide that chewing ice is suddenly a great idea. Crowns are strong. They are not indestructible.

Is a Crown Right for Your Premolar?

If a premolar has lost a lot of its structure a crown is often the way to protect what is left of the premolar. I prefer that approach over patching a heavily damaged premolar with larger fillings when the premolar clearly needs more support.

The good part is that a well‑fitted crown should not demand attention once you get used to the premolar. You chew normally. You brush normally. Eventually you stop noticing the crown.

Dental Implant Services in Popular Locations

Dental Implants in Isleworth Dental Implants in Brentford Dental Implants in Ealing Dental Implants in Feltham Dental Implants in Hounslow Dental Implants in Richmond Dental Implants in Southall Dental Implants in Twickenham

Why Would a Premolar Need a Crown?
