Your dentist must take away some enamel from the tooth so the crown fits correctly. How much enamel is removed depends on the kind of crown and how the tooth looks.

Enamel does not grow back. That’s why I believe crowns should only be used when there is a need, not just as a quick fix for appearance. If a tooth can be fixed with an invasive option keeping more of the natural tooth is usually the better choice.

Sensitivity Can Happen

After getting a crown the tooth may become sensitive to cold foods and drinks. This is common after the treatment. For people the sensitivity goes away as the tooth gets used to the new crown.

If the sensitivity continues or gets worse it needs attention. It might mean the nerve inside the tooth is irritated or something else is wrong. Don’t ignore it just because someone said sensitivity is normal.

Crowns Can Feel Different at First

A new crown can feel strange in your mouth. Your tongue picks up on it away—apparently your tongue has no other job to do.

The bite may also feel off if the crown sits a little too high. You might notice this when you chew or when your teeth meet together. A dentist can adjust the crown. That usually helps a lot.

Crowns Don’t Last Forever

A dental crown is strong but its still a restoration. Over time it can wear down crack, come loose or get damaged. How long it lasts depends on your bite. How well you take care of your teeth.

Grinding your teeth is hard on crowns. If you clench or grind at night your dentist might suggest a night guard. Otherwise that expensive crown could be suffering while you sleep.

There Can Be Problems Around the Crown

Gum irritation can happen. A crown that doesn’t fit well may trap food. Cause discomfort around the gum line. Even a made crown needs regular brushing and cleaning around the edges.

Some signs should not be ignored:

• Pain when biting that doesn’t go away especially if the tooth feels sore of just different.

• Food keeps getting stuck near the part of the crown—it becomes frustrating fast.

• A loose feeling. Don’t keep testing it with your tongue all day. Get it checked.

•. Swelling in the gums around the crown that doesn’t improve even with good cleaning.

Cost and Replacement Can Add Up

Crowns are not the option in dentistry and the cost doesn’t stop after the first visit. If the crown needs replacing you’ll pay for another treatment.

That doesn’t mean crowns aren’t worth it. Quite the opposite. A good crown can save a damaged tooth and let you eat normally again.. The cost should be part of your decision especially when comparing a crown to other possible treatments.

So Are Dental Crowns Worth It?

For a tooth that is cracked or severely damaged a crown might be what you need. The downsides seem smaller when the alternative is losing a tooth that could have been saved.

A crown shouldn’t be automatic. Ask why you need one how much tooth structure will be. What other treatments are realistic for your situation. Your dentist should explain things clearly without making it sound like a sales pitch.

Dental Implant Services in Popular Locations

Dental Implants in Isleworth Dental Implants in Brentford Dental Implants in Ealing Dental Implants in Feltham Dental Implants in Hounslow Dental Implants in Richmond Dental Implants in Southall Dental Implants in Twickenham

The Tooth Has to Be Reshaped The biggest disadvantage is easy to understand.
