If there isn’t strong tooth left after the decay is removed a filling may not give the tooth enough support. A crown makes sense in that situation.

The same applies after a tooth cracks. A small crack doesn’t always need a crown. A deeper one can leave the tooth vulnerable every time you chew. If the crack keeps spreading things get much harder to fix later.

After a Root Canal

Root canal treatment removes tissue from inside the tooth. The tooth stays in place. It often needs extra protection afterward especially if a large amount of its structure was already lost.

This is one situation where a crown is commonly recommended. The restored tooth still needs to deal with chewing and a crown gives it a stronger outer layer.

When a Large Filling Isn’t Enough

A crown can be an option when the remaining tooth needs more support. Personally I’d rather deal with a planned crown than keep patching a badly weakened tooth and hoping it behaves.

There are also cases where an old filling has failed and the tooth underneath has cracked. Your dentist will check how much healthy tooth remains before deciding what restoration actually makes sense.

After a Tooth Has Broken

A tooth doesn’t always mean you need a crown. If only a small piece has chipped away another type of restoration could be enough.

If a large section has fractured, particularly around the biting surface a crown can cover and protect the remaining structure. You may notice the difference when eating because the tooth feels less sensitive and less exposed.

When a Crown Improves a Worn or Misshapen Tooth

Teeth don’t always need crowns because of sudden damage. Severe wear can also change their shape. Reduce the amount of healthy structure available for normal biting.

Crowns can also be used when a tooth has a shape problem or has become badly discoloured and can’t be improved with a simpler cosmetic treatment.Using a crown for appearance alone deserves a proper conversation first. Removing natural tooth structure isn’t something I’d rush into for an upgrade.

Signs You Should Get the Tooth Checked

• A tooth that hurts when you bite especially if the pain feels deep than like simple sensitivity deserves a proper examination.

• A visible crack or a large broken section is worth checking because chewing pressure can make the damage worse.

• An old filling has started feeling loose or uncomfortable which often means the tooth underneath needs another look.

• After a root canal the tooth may need a crown to protect the remaining structure particularly when a lot of the tooth was removed.

• Food keeps catching around a damaged tooth. Annoying, yes. It can also point to a broken edge or a change in the tooths shape.

So Does Every Damaged Tooth Need a Crown?

A dentist should first look at how healthy tooth remains and what caused the damage. A filling may be enough for a problem. Another restoration could make sense in a different case. The crown comes into the picture when the tooth needs the support and coverage.

If your dentist recommends a crown ask what would happen without one. Ask how much healthy tooth is left. You don’t need a lecture. You just need to understand why your tooth needs that protection.

Dental Implant Services in Popular Locations

Dental Implants in Isleworth Dental Implants in Brentford Dental Implants in Ealing Dental Implants in Feltham Dental Implants in Hounslow Dental Implants in Richmond Dental Implants in Southall Dental Implants in Twickenham

A Tooth Has Been Seriously Damaged A deep cavity can eat away more of a tooth than you can see in the mirror.
