Your mouth may still feel numb from the anaesthetic. Smoking can feel different than usual. You could also accidentally bite your cheek. Burn yourself without noticing properly.

Importantly smoking affects the tissues around your teeth. It reduces blood flow in the gums, which’s n’t what you want while the area is recovering.. If your crown was placed after deeper dental work giving your mouth a break becomes even more important.

Give the Crown Time to Settle

If your dentist used cement be extra careful. The crown needs to stay in position while the cement does its job. Strong chewing pressure isn’t helpful here. Neither is immediately going back to your usual smoking habit.

What Smoking Can Do Over Time

The bigger issue isn’t that first cigarette. Regular smoking can affect gum health around the crowned tooth. Increase the chance of plaque building up near the gumline. That matters because a crown still sits next to natural tooth structure and that natural tooth can develop decay.

Theres staining. The crown itself won’t stain in the same way as natural enamel but the teeth around it can darken. Eventually you may notice a difference that wasn’t there when the crown was fitted.

Honestly this is one reason I’d avoid smoking around a crown if you can. Keeping the area clean is easier than trying to fix a problem

If You Do Smoke Anyway

If you’re going to smoke despite the advice to wait at least give your mouth some breathing room after the procedure.

• The 24 hours matter most. Your mouth needs a stretch before you get back to normal habits.

• Water afterward is a habit though it doesn’t cancel out the effects of smoking.

• Around the gumline be gentle. Aggressive brushing because you’re worried about the crown can make a tender area feel worse.

• A loose crown, pain or bleeding that keeps going deserves a call to your dentist rather than another cigarette and a wait-and-see approach.

When Can You Smoke Normally Again?

There’s no hour when smoking suddenly becomes harmless for a crowned tooth. If the crown is permanent and the area feels comfortable your dentist may simply advise you to return to care while reminding you about the risks of smoking.

If the gum is still sore, swollen or bleeding I’d hold off. Your mouth is giving you information there.

If quitting has been on your mind anyway a new crown is a pretty decent excuse to start. You might get used to not reaching for a cigarette before you notice the habit has changed. Why make the new crown work harder than it needs to?

Dental Implant Services in Popular Locations

Dental Implants in Isleworth Dental Implants in Brentford Dental Implants in Ealing Dental Implants in Feltham Dental Implants in Hounslow Dental Implants in Richmond Dental Implants in Southall Dental Implants in Twickenham

Why Smoking Right After a Crown Isn’t a Great Idea The first few hours are the part.
