What Can You Eat First?<\/h2>\r\n

For the first few hours, soft food is the sensible move. Your mouth may still feel numb if you had local anaesthetic, and biting while numb is an easy way to hurt your cheek or tongue without realising it.<\/p>\r\n

Start Softer Than Usual<\/h3>\r\n

\u2022 Soft and warm rather than very hot, especially while your mouth still feels numb.<\/p>\r\n

\u2022 Yogurt works nicely here, and you won’t need to chew much at all.<\/p>\r\n

\u2022 A soft sandwich is fine once the numb feeling has gone, though don’t turn it into a serious biting test.<\/p>\r\n

What Should You Avoid?<\/h2>\r\n

Crunchy food is where I’d be more cautious. Hard sweets are a particularly bad idea right after crown placement because they put a lot of force through one small area. Ice belongs nowhere near your new crown either.<\/p>\r\n

Sticky foods deserve some attention too. Caramel can cling around the crown and make chewing awkward, especially while the cement is settling. If you have a temporary crown rather than the permanent one, be even more careful because temporary crowns aren’t designed for the same demands.<\/p>\r\n

When Can You Eat Normally?<\/h2>\r\n

Once the numbness has completely worn off, you can usually start eating more normally, unless your dentist gave you different instructions. Mild sensitivity when chewing isn’t unusual during the early adjustment period, and you may simply notice the tooth less as the days pass.<\/p>\r\n

But if your crown feels too high when you bite, that’s worth mentioning to your dentist. A crown that hits before the other teeth can make chewing uncomfortable, and a small adjustment can often sort it out.<\/p>\r\n
