The dentist looks at the tooth and the area around it then takes out any parts that are damaged and cannot stay under the crown. If the tooth needs a root canal first that changes the schedule because the tooth has to be treated before the crown is placed.

Local anaesthetic makes the area numb during the preparation. You will probably feel pressure and vibration more than anything. Once the tooth has the shape the dentist takes an impression or a digital scan so the permanent crown can be made to fit your bite.

The Temporary Crown

Before you go you will usually get a crown. It protects the tooth that has been prepared while you wait for the one.

A temporary crown is not meant to feel like the result. It can feel a little strange for the day or two especially when you bite down. Be careful with it. Sticky foods are not a good idea because they can pull it off.

Waiting for the Permanent Crown

• a short wait though the exact number of days depends on the dental lab and the dentists schedule.

• The temporary crown is there to protect the tooth so treat it gently. Trying to crunch something on that side is not worth it.

• If your bite feels high or uncomfortable after the temporary crown is placed say something than hoping you will get used to it.

The Final Crown Fitting

The second main appointment is usually much easier. The dentist takes off the crown and checks the permanent one before putting it in place with cement.

They will look at how the crown sits to the other teeth and how your upper and lower teeth meet when you bite. If something feels a little wrong the dentist can make changes before the crown is fixed permanently.

Then comes the cement. Once the crown is in place extra material is cleaned away. The dentist checks the bite again. You may leave feeling like there is something in your mouth. That is normal at first.

The Few Days After Fitting

Your mouth usually gets used to the new crown fairly quickly. Some sensitivity can happen, with a tooth that has recently been prepared. If you have ongoing pain a crown that feels loose or a bite that still feels wrong call your dentist.

So How Long Does the Whole Process Take?

For a crown think about two main dental visits that happen with the time needed to make the permanent crown in between. The first appointment takes longer because the tooth has to be shaped and measured. The second appointment is usually easier.

Things take longer if the tooth needs treatment first. An infection a lot of damage or a complicated bite can all change the schedule. It is the same with some cases where the dentist wants to take time before putting the final crown in place.

Dental Implant Services in Popular Locations

Dental Implants in Isleworth Dental Implants in Brentford Dental Implants in Ealing Dental Implants in Feltham Dental Implants in Hounslow Dental Implants in Richmond Dental Implants in Southall Dental Implants in Twickenham

Your First Appointment The first visit is where most of the work on the tooth happens.
