Listen to them; numb cheeks can be bitten with surprising ease.

Additionally, don’t risk damaging your new crown by testing it on some hard food straight away. For the first day or so, soft foods will be less tiring for your jaws, and will put less strain on your new tooth while it settles in.

Watch out for how you’re biting

If you think you might have a problem, contact us to come in and make any necessary adjustments. It’s far safer than waiting for that tell-tale high spot to magically disappear, just when you’ve got used to it.

Keep brushing

Even though you’ve got a new crown, you still need to take care with your oral hygiene. Your real tooth needs to be protected, and the gums around the crown need cleaning too.

Brush gently around the crown twice a day, and remember to floss (but not to force the floss upwards if your dentist has shown you a different way to deal with that crown!). And remember to be gentle with sticky foods…

Sticky foods

For the first day or so. In general, it’s best to avoid sticky things for a few days, as they can pull on the crown and loosen it. Hard foods also need to be avoided, especially if you have a liking for crunching ice cubes or biting into hard sweets. If you feel that one side of your mouth is more sensitive than the other, try not to chew on that side for a while.

Sensitivity to cold things

Is also a common complaint. This is to be expected, but how much you experience it and for how long will vary from person to person. If you find that your sensitive tooth is steadily becoming less sensitive, then it’s nothing to worry about. However, if the pain is increasing or persists for longer than you’d expect, or if it becomes painful in other ways or for no apparent reason, then give us a call.

Sometimes, a crowned tooth will need further work, or the bite may need adjusting, but you won’t know that unless you come and see us.

Do not attempt to glue it back on if it becomes unsecure, and do not try to chew on the other side if one side is ‘playing up’. If your crown comes off completely, try and keep it somewhere safe (in case it can be reattached), and give us a ring to come and see what can be done.

Get used to the sensation

Of having a new crown; it doesn’t last forever, and you’ll soon forget it’s even there.Your tongue will stop ‘investigating’ and you’ll be able to eat as though nothing was wrong.

But you should continue to see your dentist for check-ups, as the crown (and the real tooth underneath it) still need to be cared for, even if they’re not natural teeth.

Dental Implant Services in Popular Locations

Dental Implants in Isleworth Dental Implants in Brentford Dental Implants in Ealing Dental Implants in Feltham Dental Implants in Hounslow Dental Implants in Richmond Dental Implants in Southall Dental Implants in Twickenham

Give your mouth a moment Your dentist may advise you to avoid eating for a while, if you’ve had a local anesthetic.
