The tooth underneath may look perfectly fine. Or there may be decay hiding around an old filling. Sometimes the crown itself has simply worn out or stopped fitting properly.

Sometimes the Old Crown Goes Back On

A crown doesn’t always get thrown away after removal. If it came off because the cement failed and the crown itself is still in good shape, your dentist may be able to clean it and cement it back into place.

• Still usable, which is good news when the crown fits well and the tooth underneath looks healthy.

• A temporary crown may be needed if the old one can’t go back on, especially while the dentist works out the next step.

• If there’s decay underneath, that has to be dealt with first. Covering it up again isn’t going to make the problem disappear.

What If the Tooth Needs More Work?

This is where things can change. If the dentist finds decay or damage under the crown, they may need to repair the tooth before placing another crown. The exact treatment depends on how much healthy tooth remains.

Sometimes the tooth needs a new filling or buildup. In other cases, the damage reaches the inner part of the tooth and a root canal becomes necessary. That sounds intimidating, but the goal is simple: keep the tooth usable if it can still be saved.

You May Leave With a Temporary Crown

A temporary crown is usually made to protect the tooth while the final restoration is being prepared. It won’t feel exactly like the permanent one. That’s normal.

Be a little careful with it. Very sticky foods are a bad idea because they can pull a temporary crown loose. And if it feels too high when you bite, tell your dentist instead of trying to get used to it.

What Does Recovery Feel Like?

After the appointment, your tooth and gums may feel tender. If you received local anesthetic, your mouth can stay numb for a while, so wait until the feeling returns before chewing anything that could make you bite your cheek or tongue.

Some sensitivity isn’t surprising either. The tooth has just been worked on, and the surrounding gum may be irritated. Usually, it settles down as things calm down.

The Part People Overthink

Follow the care instructions your dentist gives you, especially if the tooth has had additional treatment. Don’t skip a follow-up just because the pain has disappeared. A tooth can feel fine while still needing attention.

Crown removal is usually a step toward fixing the problem, not a problem by itself. The important thing is what the dentist finds underneath and how well that tooth can be restored.

Dental Implant Services in Popular Locations

Dental Implants in Isleworth Dental Implants in Brentford Dental Implants in Ealing Dental Implants in Feltham Dental Implants in Hounslow Dental Implants in Richmond Dental Implants in Southall Dental Implants in Twickenham

The Tooth Gets Checked Once the crown has been removed, your dentist can finally see the tooth clearly.
