Decay could have penetrated further to expose other sensitive areas. Similarly, a crack can expose the tooth to sensitivity. Sometimes, the enamel has worn away so that the usual hot or cold drinks can send a zap through the tooth.

It also depends on whether the pain was fleeting, vanishing the moment the trigger was removed. A dentist has to treat these as different to a pain that persists long after the cold drink has finished.

Why the Tooth Gets Sensitive

The tooth that has been damaged is likely to give its owner less protection. Cold water will run through the exposed area and give a strange sensation somewhere in the tooth.

Sensitivity After Crown Treatment

It is normal for a tooth to be a little sensitive after being crowned. After all, its sides have been scraped in preparation for the crown going on. Not only that, but the patient’s bite has changed, even if the crown seems to fit fine.

The sensitivity should pass as the gum and surrounding tissue get used to the new crown. Cold drinks may be a bit of a shock, but biting down will feel strange too.

What Improvement Usually Feels Like

• Flitting sensitivity to cold things is less worrying than pain that lingers long after the cold thing has been put down.

• A crown that feels too high in the mouth needs to be checked by the dentist, particularly if the tooth feels sensitive every time one bites down.

• Subsiding sensitivity after treatment is not a bad sign, but it should not be growing worse.

When Sensitivity Before and After Treatment Needs Attention

The problem with toothaches is that not every one behaves sensibly. A crown may cover most of the tooth, but it cannot stop every source of pain inside it.

If the nerve was inflamed before the treatment, it can show signs of continuing to be so long afterwards. In some cases, the tooth may have to be subjected to root canal treatment in order to stop it from hurting. This is a decision a dentist makes on looking at the symptoms and not merely on the sensitivity.

Severe pain that wakes a person up at night should be mentioned. Swelling around the tooth is also reason to get something done, not something to sit on for a month and hope the crown will magic it away.

The Before-and-After Difference

Before treatment, sensitivity arises in the damaged tooth and shows itself as pain. After treatment, a brief period of sensitivity can merely be part of a tooth calming down.

The direction of the improvement matters more than the dwelling on all the little ways in which it is not improving. If things are generally feeling better, then that is a good sign. If they are feeling generally worse, then something has to be looked at.

Dental Implant Services in Popular Locations

Dental Implants in Isleworth Dental Implants in Brentford Dental Implants in Ealing Dental Implants in Feltham Dental Implants in Hounslow Dental Implants in Richmond Dental Implants in Southall Dental Implants in Twickenham

What Sensitivity Feels Like Before a Crown Prior to treatment, sensitivity has typically arisen from the tooth itself.
