When a crown is placed the dentist takes away an enamel so the crown fits. This can make the inside of the tooth sensitive for a while.

If the tooth had problems before the crown was put on the nerve might already be sore. A tooth that had decay or a big filling has less protection around its nerve so cold drinks or pressure can feel very sharp.

Cold Sensitivity Is Usually the One

You may feel a quick sting after drinking something cold. It can happen with ice water. It can also happen when you breathe through your mouth on a morning.

The good news is that short sensitivity is usually not a reason to worry. If the feeling goes away quickly after the trigger is gone the tooth is usually settling.

What Does Normal Crown Sensitivity Feel Like?

There is a difference between a sensitivity and pain that stays. A new crown can feel tender when you bite down in the first few days. It may also react to hot or cold.

Usually the feeling fades as time goes on. That is what people sometimes miss. Recovery is not always dramatic. You may just notice one morning that you drank water and did not think about the tooth later.

When Sensitivity Deserves Attention

• A quick cold sting that disappears soon is usually much less concerning than pain that keeps pulsing.

• If biting feels strangely high on that tooth tell your dentist. A small bite adjustment can make a difference.

• Pain that wakes you at night deserves attention especially if it was not happening before.

• Swelling around the tooth is not something to watch for weeks. Get it checked.

• Heat sensitivity that stays after the drink is gone is worth telling the dentist at your appointment.

What Can You Do About Crown Sensitivity?

Use a toothbrush and brush gently around the crowned tooth. Being aggressive will not make the tooth settle faster. It usually just makes your gums hurt too.

A toothpaste made for teeth can also help. The trick is to use it. Using it once and expecting the sensitivity to vanish overnight is not realistic.

When Should You Call Your Dentist?

Severe pain is another matter. Swelling, a taste near the tooth or discomfort that does not seem linked to eating or drinking are signs that need a proper dental check instead of another week of hoping they will go away.

Sometimes the issue is simple. The crown may need an adjustment. In cases the tooth underneath may need more treatment. You cannot really tell which it is by poking the tooth with your tongue all day.

The Beginner-Friendly Way to Think About It

What matters most is the pattern. A short reaction that gradually improves is very different from pain that lingers, worsens or starts without a trigger.

Personally I would rather have sensitivity checked once than spend three weeks convincing myself that every strange twinge is normal. Teeth have a way of making you notice when something is not quite right.

Dental Implant Services in Popular Locations

Dental Implants in Isleworth Dental Implants in Brentford Dental Implants in Ealing Dental Implants in Feltham Dental Implants in Hounslow Dental Implants in Richmond Dental Implants in Southall Dental Implants in Twickenham

Why Does a Crown Feel Sensitive?
