Soft foods are a sensible choice because biting something hard immediately after treatment is asking the tooth to work before it has settled properly.

Hot or cold drinks can also feel sharper than usual for a few days. Sensitivity doesn’t automatically mean something is wrong. But if the discomfort keeps getting worse instead of easing, tell your dentist.

The First 24 Hours Matter Most

• Soft food wins early on, especially if chewing feels awkward on that side.

• Skip very sticky sweets for now. They can pull at a temporary crown and make an already annoying day more annoying.

• Cold drinks may sting briefly, which is common after treatment, but lingering pain deserves a call to the dental practice.

Keep the Area Clean Without Overthinking It

Brushing still matters. A crowned tooth needs the same basic cleaning as the rest of your mouth, so don’t avoid the area because you’re worried about damaging it.

Use a soft toothbrush and brush around the gumline gently. There’s no prize for scrubbing harder. In fact, aggressive brushing can irritate the gums around the crown, which is the opposite of what you want during recovery.

Flossing needs a little care too. Slide the floss between the teeth rather than snapping it down against the gum. If you’re dealing with a temporary crown, your dentist may give you specific instructions about how to remove the floss without loosening it.

Don’t Treat the Crown Like a Tool

This sounds obvious until you see how many people test a new crown by biting something ridiculous. Ice is a classic example. So are hard sweets and random bits of packaging that really should have stayed in the drawer.

Crowns are made to handle normal chewing, not experiments. Personally, I’d rather be boring here. A few weeks of sensible habits beats dealing with a cracked crown later.

Watch How Your Bite Feels

Your bite might feel slightly unusual immediately after treatment. That’s expected. What shouldn’t happen is a strong feeling that the crowned tooth hits first every time you close your mouth.

If that happens, don’t spend days trying to adjust your chewing around it. Contact your dentist. A small adjustment can make a big difference, and you’ll usually notice the improvement straight away.

Know What’s Normal During Recovery

Mild sensitivity can happen after a crown, particularly when the tooth has had a lot of work done before the crown was fitted. The gums around the tooth can also feel tender for a little while.

• A little gum tenderness isn’t unusual after treatment, especially if the area was worked on heavily.

• Persistent pain is different. If it isn’t settling or is getting stronger, get the tooth checked rather than waiting it out.

Let the Crown Become Boring

After the initial sensitivity settles, return to your usual brushing and flossing routine. Keep dental check-ups as advised, and don’t suddenly start treating the crowned tooth like it needs special handling forever.

A good crown should eventually feel like part of your normal bite. No constant tongue checking. No careful chewing every time you eat. Just a tooth that gets out of your way while you get on with your day.

Dental Implant Services in Popular Locations

Dental Implants in Isleworth Dental Implants in Brentford Dental Implants in Ealing Dental Implants in Feltham Dental Implants in Hounslow Dental Implants in Richmond Dental Implants in Southall Dental Implants in Twickenham

Be Gentle With Your Crown at First For the first day, keep chewing away from the crowned tooth if you can.
