It can seem too tall when you bite down, or you might simply be very aware that something new is sitting there. That feeling often fades as you get used to the crown.

Some sensitivity is normal too. Cold drinks can briefly bother the tooth, particularly if it had a lot of treatment before the crown was fitted. Usually, this settles down over the following days.

The First Few Hours

Once you can feel your mouth properly, start with something comfortable to chew. You don’t need to treat yourself like you’ve just had major surgery.

• Still numb? Give eating a little time. Accidentally chewing your cheek is a silly way to make recovery harder.

• A tender tooth for a few days is fairly common, especially after deeper dental work.

• If your bite feels wrong every time you close your teeth, mention it rather than hoping you’ll simply get used to it.

Eating After a Dental Crown

Food becomes much easier once the numbness disappears. I’d still avoid biting into something extremely hard on the crowned tooth during the early recovery period. The crown is designed for normal chewing, but there’s no prize for testing it on day one.

Sticky foods deserve a little caution too. Something chewy can pull at a newly cemented crown and make the area feel uncomfortable. Keep things simple at first.

Brushing and Flossing

Brush around the crown gently, especially if the gum around it feels sore. Floss normally unless your dentist has given you different instructions. The gum needs to stay clean because food trapped around the crown can cause irritation.

Some people become overly cautious and barely touch the crowned tooth with a toothbrush. That’s actually a bad habit. Clean it properly, just without being rough.

What the First Week Is Like

Recovery isn’t always perfectly linear, though. You might feel fine one day and notice mild sensitivity the next. What matters is the overall direction. Persistent or worsening discomfort deserves a call to your dentist.

• Mild sensitivity that gradually fades is usually reassuring, especially when the tooth feels better each day.

• Gum tenderness around the crown can hang around briefly. It should become less annoying rather than more painful.

• A crown that feels high when you bite down needs checking, because your bite should feel natural once everything has settled.

When Recovery Doesn’t Feel Right

Pay attention to pain that keeps getting stronger. The same goes for swelling or a crown that feels loose. These aren’t things to simply wait out because you hope they’ll disappear.

And if the crown comes off, keep it safe and contact your dentist. Don’t try to permanently glue it back yourself. Dental cement isn’t the sort of DIY project worth experimenting with.

Dental Implant Services in Popular Locations

Dental Implants in Isleworth Dental Implants in Brentford Dental Implants in Ealing Dental Implants in Feltham Dental Implants in Hounslow Dental Implants in Richmond Dental Implants in Southall Dental Implants in Twickenham

What Recovery Feels Like Right after the appointment, your tooth may feel strange.
