Your dentist will look at the prepared tooth and the surrounding gum before deciding to cement anything permanently.

If there’s unexpected pain or tenderness, that’s worth discussing before the crown goes on. The same goes for swelling or a gum problem around the tooth. Sometimes the issue is small. Sometimes it changes the plan completely.

The Basic Tooth Check

• The prepared tooth should be clean and dry. Moisture can interfere with bonding, so this boring little step matters more than it looks.

• Bite position matters too. If the crown feels too high during the trial fitting, your dentist should adjust it before final cementation rather than hoping you’ll simply get used to it.

• Any unusual sensitivity deserves a mention, especially if the tooth had a deep filling or root canal treatment before the crown was planned.

Try the Crown Before Making It Permanent

This is the part patients sometimes rush because they assume the crown has already been checked at the laboratory. It has. But your mouth isn’t a laboratory model, and the final fit still needs to be assessed inside your mouth.

Your dentist will place the crown temporarily and check how it sits. The edges should meet the tooth properly. It shouldn’t rock around. The shape should also work with the nearby teeth instead of pushing awkwardly against them.

Make Sure the Crown and Tooth Are Ready

The final checks aren’t glamorous, but they’re where a lot of the practical work happens. The crown needs to be clean. The tooth needs proper isolation. And the dentist needs enough visibility to work accurately around the margins.

The chosen cement also matters. Different crowns and tooth conditions call for different cementation approaches. Your dentist will select the material based on the crown type and the clinical situation rather than simply using whatever happens to be nearby.

• Crown surface cleaned and prepared according to the material. This is especially important because different crown materials don’t all behave the same way.

• The tooth is isolated from saliva as much as reasonably possible, since contamination at the wrong moment can affect the cementation process.

What You Should Tell Your Dentist First

Don’t keep quiet about something just because the appointment is already booked. Tell your dentist if the temporary crown has fallen out or if the tooth has started hurting since your last visit.

The checklist itself is simple. The thinking behind it isn’t. A few minutes spent checking the tooth, crown and bite can save a lot of annoyance later.

And that’s really where I’d rather see the time spent. Not rushing through the final step just because the crown looks ready, but making sure everything feels right before the cement sets.

Dental Implant Services in Popular Locations

Dental Implants in Isleworth Dental Implants in Brentford Dental Implants in Ealing Dental Implants in Feltham Dental Implants in Hounslow Dental Implants in Richmond Dental Implants in Southall Dental Implants in Twickenham

Check the Tooth Before Cementation The tooth needs to be in a condition where the crown actually makes sense.
