A basic metal crown usually sits at a different price point from a tooth-coloured ceramic crown. Porcelain options often cost more because they focus heavily on appearance and need careful shade matching.

Zirconia crowns are another popular choice. They’re strong and have a natural-looking appearance, which makes them attractive for both front and back teeth. But that doesn’t mean every zirconia crown costs the same. The brand and laboratory used by the dentist matter too.

Laboratory Work Matters More Than People Expect

A dental crown isn’t usually made inside the treatment room. A dental laboratory creates it from the dentist’s instructions and impressions or digital scans. Better laboratory work often costs more because the crown needs accurate fitting and a finish that looks right in your mouth.

The Tooth May Need Extra Treatment

Sometimes the dentist can’t cement a crown straight onto the tooth. If there’s decay underneath it, that problem needs attention first. A weak or badly damaged tooth may need additional support before the crown can be placed.

• Previous treatment matters here. A tooth that’s already prepared and healthy underneath is a very different job from one that needs more work before the crown can stay secure.

• Temporary crown costs may also appear on the bill, especially if your permanent crown is made during a separate appointment.

Dentist and Clinic Fees

Dental fees aren’t identical from one clinic to another. A dentist with extensive restorative experience may charge more, and that’s fairly normal. The clinic’s location also affects prices because operating costs differ between areas.

A clinic in a major city may have higher fees than one in a smaller town. That doesn’t automatically tell you anything about treatment quality, though. I’d pay more attention to how clearly the dentist explains the treatment than to a shiny reception area.

What Should the Quote Include?

Before agreeing to treatment, ask what the quoted crown price actually covers. Some clinics give one combined figure. Others separate the consultation, preparation, temporary crown, laboratory work and final cementation.

• The final crown and cementation should be clear in the quote, especially if the clinic charges separately for laboratory work.

• If tooth preparation is included, ask exactly what that means. A simple preparation isn’t the same job as rebuilding a badly damaged tooth.

Does Crown Cementation Itself Cost Much?

The cement used also varies. Dentists choose a cement based on the crown material and the tooth. A dentist won’t simply pick the cheapest option and hope for the best. The cement needs to create a suitable bond and help the crown stay in position.

And ask whether follow-up adjustments are covered. Occasionally, a newly cemented crown feels slightly high when you bite. A small adjustment can make a huge difference to how natural the tooth feels.

Dental Implant Services in Popular Locations

Dental Implants in Isleworth Dental Implants in Brentford Dental Implants in Ealing Dental Implants in Feltham Dental Implants in Hounslow Dental Implants in Richmond Dental Implants in Southall Dental Implants in Twickenham

The Type of Crown Changes the Price The crown material has a big say in what you pay.
