It acts as a shield and helps you chew normally without leaving the tooth exposed. Since it’s only meant to last a time the material used is easier for the dentist to remove later. Once the permanent crown is ready it’s placed in its place.

Can I Eat Normally With a Crown?

You can eat with some caution. Your dentist will suggest avoiding hard or sticky foods because the temporary crown isn’t attached as securely as the permanent one. On the day soft foods are best especially if your mouth is still numb. As the numbness fades you can slowly go back to your diet.

Sticky sweets like caramel or taffy can be a problem. They can pull at the crown. Possibly cause it to come loose. Crunchy foods like nuts or hard candy should be eaten carefully especially if you tend to chew on one side of your mouth.

Can a Temporary Crown Fall Off?

Yes it can happen. Since temporary crowns are held in place with cement they’re designed to come off easily when it’s time to fit the permanent crown.

If your crown comes off don’t panic. Keep the crown safe. Contact your dentist. Do not try to reattach it with household glue or any other home fix—it won’t. Could cause more harm.

Can I Brush and Floss Around It?

Yes you should. Keeping the area clean is important because food particles can get stuck around the edge of the crown. Brush around the crown to avoid pushing it loose.

When flossing, slide the floss out from the side of the tooth of pulling it straight up. This helps avoid tugging at the crown. Being careful with flossing keeps the area healthy. Prevents irritation.

Is Some Sensitivity Normal?

Mild sensitivity is common after a tooth has been shaped for a crown. You might feel it when drinking liquids or when chewing. This usually goes away within a days.

If the sensitivity turns into sharp pain or if the crown feels loose don’t ignore it. Call your dentist if the discomfort gets worse of improving.

What Is a Temporary Dental Crown?
