Your dentist will usually examine how the crown sits and how your teeth meet when you bite. They may also take an X-ray if they need a view underneath the crown.

Sometimes the repair is fairly simple. A small chip or worn area can often be restored without replacing the crown.. A badly cracked crown or one that has lost its fit usually needs more attention.

• A rough edge that your tongue keeps finding especially when you aren’t even thinking about it.

• Pain when biting down deserves a check. The crown might not be the thing causing it.

• A loose feeling. Even slight movement isn’t something I’d ignore.

• Food getting trapped around the crown can become really annoying particularly if it happens in the spot every day.

The treatment depends on the damage. Your dentist might. Rebuild a small damaged area. If the crown can’t be repaired properly removing it and fitting a replacement is usually the sensible route.

If the tooth underneath has decay or another issue that needs attention before a new crown goes on. Otherwise you’re basically putting a cover over an unresolved problem.

After treatment the area can feel a little different. That’s normal. Your tongue notices everything for a while when the crown looks completely fine.

You might also notice sensitivity particularly if the tooth needed more work than expected.. Persistent pain, increasing swelling or a crown that still feels loose deserves another appointment.

The before and after difference isn’t always dramatic in a photograph. Sometimes the crown looks almost unchanged because the repair is focused on its fit or function.

A good repair should also look like it belongs there. The shape matters,. So does the way the crown meets the surrounding teeth. Personally I’d take a crown that feels right over one that only looks impressive in a mirror.

Repair isn’t always the answer. If the crown has a fracture keeps coming loose or no longer protects the tooth properly replacement can make more sense.

Your dentist will look at the condition of the crown and the tooth underneath before deciding.. That distinction matters because fixing the crown alone won’t help if the tooth has become compromised.
