Your dentist begins by looking at the tooth and getting it ready for the crown. This usually involves taking away a bit of the tooth so the crown can fit just right. You will get a numbing first so you should not feel sharp pain while the tooth is being prepared.<\/p>\r\n
The strange thing is the pressure. You might hear the drill and feel some movement around the tooth but the area should stay numb. If anything hurts speak up. You do not gain anything by dealing with discomfort during a dental visit.<\/p>\r\n
Once the tooth is shaped your dentist takes an impression. Uses a digital scanner to record the size and shape of the tooth. This information is sent to the lab where your permanent crown is created.<\/p>\r\n
You will usually go home with a crown while you wait for the permanent one. It is not meant to last for a time. Be careful with it especially if it feels loose or catches when you chew.<\/p>\r\n
During the visit your dentist removes the temporary crown and checks the permanent one on your tooth. They will look at how it fits and your bite make small changes if needed.<\/p>\r\n
At first the new crown can feel unusual. Your tongue will probably keep finding it because that is what tongues do when something changes. Give it some time. Once your bite gets used to it you often stop noticing the crown<\/p>\r\n

\u2022 Some sensitivity for a time is normal but strong or long-lasting pain should be reported to the dentist.<\/p>\r\n
Metal crowns are very practical for teeth where strength is more important than having a tooth-colored look. I actually believe they are not given credit. They are not trying to be fancy. They just need to do their job.<\/p>\r\n
If the crown is visible when you smile though you might want a tooth-colored option for appearance reasons. That is a discussion with your dentist.<\/p>\r\n
