Avoid chewing any hard foods until the numbness has worn off.

As soon as you feel better, you can begin to eat soft foods to allow some healing to occur. Keep in mind, while your crown is tough enough to withstand normal chewing forces, your actual tooth will still require some extra care to prevent decay.

Your Daily Crown Care

The most important thing you can do is take steps to ensure plaque does not build up around your crown which could lead to the gum tissues around it becoming inflamed. Your natural tooth is still susceptible to decay so don’t assume the ceramic material of your crown makes it impossible to develop cavities.

• Flossing can be tricky for a day or two so be gentle but make sure you continue to do it.

• Sticky sweets should also be avoided as they can be hard to remove from around the crown, especially if it is still healing.

• Chewing hard things can cause cracks to appear in your crown so save the ice for when you’re feeling more comfortable with a new dental restoration.

Watch for Problems

Sensitivities are fairly common after a crown is placed. It’s normal for your teeth to be a little sensitive to hot and cold items right after your procedure but it should subside as the tissues heal. If that’s not the case or if the sensitivity becomes severe and persistent, then you should book an appointment with your dentist as soon as possible.

Sharp, sudden pains or discomfort that begins after eating may also be a sign that something is wrong. Same goes for any crown that feels loose or develops a crack of some kind. Do not attempt to test how firmly attached it is by biting down on something hard.

The Habits That Keep It Feeling Normal

• The most important thing you can do is make sure you continue to see your dentist for regular check-ups and cleanings. They’ll be able to spot any potential problems before they become expensive and inconvenient to treat.

• If you find yourself waking up with a sore jaw or you’ve noticed that your teeth appear to be worn down, let your dentist know. You may be unknowingly grinding your teeth at night and a mouthguard may be prescribed to help prevent further damage

• If you feel like your crown has begun to feel uneven or higher than the surrounding teeth after it has been placed, don’t ignore it. Something has changed and it needs to be addressed even if you aren’t exactly sure what caused it.

Dental Implant Services in Popular Locations

Dental Implants in Isleworth Dental Implants in Brentford Dental Implants in Ealing Dental Implants in Feltham Dental Implants in Hounslow Dental Implants in Richmond Dental Implants in Southall Dental Implants in Twickenham

Right After Your Crown Is Placed For the first few hours, be extremely careful when eating as the local anaesthetic may result in you biting your cheek or tongue without realising.
