A crown covers the damaged tooth. Gives it a solid outer shell, which is especially useful for molars because they handle so much chewing pressure.

Once the crown settles in you generally stop noticing it. It feels like your tooth again which is probably the nicest part.

The Main Benefits

• Protection for a tooth. If a back tooth has lost a lot of its structure the crown gives it support of leaving the remaining tooth exposed to another crack.

• Chewing usually feels normal again though it can take a time to get used to the shape.

• A fitted crown can last for years when you look after your teeth and don’t use them as bottle openers. Seriously don’t.

The Downsides You Should Know

Here’s where I think people sometimes get too casual about crowns. Getting one means removing some tooth structure so the crown has room to fit. That part can’t be undone.

The tooth can also feel sensitive afterward. Usually this settles down. Lasting pain deserves a call to the dentist because it can point to a deeper problem.

Where Crowns Get Less Appealing

• Dental work, which means at least two visits in many cases and a temporary crown in between.

• Cost matters. A crown is usually more expensive than a filling. The price depends heavily on the material and the clinic.

• Some people grind their teeth at night. That extra pressure can shorten the crowns life so your dentist may suggest a night guard if you’re a grinder.

When a Back Tooth Crown Makes Sense

If a back tooth has an old filling and not much natural structure left I’d generally favor protecting it rather than waiting for it to break. A broken molar can turn a repair into a much bigger problem.

If theres plenty of healthy tooth remaining a crown may be more treatment than you need. Sometimes a filling or another conservative option is enough. Your dentist should explain why the crown is necessary not simply point at the X-ray and move on.

The Part People Often Forget

A crown isn’t a replacement for the tooth underneath. You still need to brush around it and clean between it and the neighboring tooth. The edge matters. So does what happens underneath the crown over the years.

If the tooth has severe decay or damage reaching the nerve a crown alone won’t fix that problem. The tooth may need root canal treatment first.

So Are Back Tooth Crowns Worth It?

For a damaged back tooth yes I think a crown is often worth it. Saving a natural tooth feels far better than dealing with a fracture that nobody saw coming.

Still don’t agree to one just because crowns are common. Ask how much healthy tooth remains and why a crown is better than a filling in your case.

Dental Implant Services in Popular Locations

Dental Implants in Isleworth Dental Implants in Brentford Dental Implants in Ealing Dental Implants in Feltham Dental Implants in Hounslow Dental Implants in Richmond Dental Implants in Southall Dental Implants in Twickenham

Why a Crown Can Be a Good Choice The biggest advantage is strength.
