Sealed. The tooth itself is still there. It has lost some of its natural structure because decay, cracks or the treatment process removed part of it. I have seen patients who have had their root canal tooth cleaned and sealed and still notice a change.

That matters. A tooth with structure has less room for error when you bite down on something hard. I remember a patient who felt uneasy when biting hard.

The Crown Adds Protection

Think of the crown as a fitted shell. The crown sits over the tooth and helps spread biting forces across the restored area instead of leaving the remaining tooth to take all that pressure alone. I always explain this to my patients.

• Back teeth usually benefit most from coverage because chewing forces are much higher there.

• Front teeth are different since appearance and biting patterns matter more and the dentist may recommend another type of restoration.

What Happens Before the Crown Goes On

First the dentist checks the treated tooth. The dentist wants to know whether the root canal has healed as expected and whether there is solid tooth left to support a crown. I always make sure to check

If the tooth has lost a lot of structure a core buildup may be needed. In some cases a post is used to help retain that buildup. A post does not magically strengthen the root. That is a point that gets misunderstood. I remind patients that a post does not strengthen the root.

The Crown Appointment

During the preparation visit the dentist reshapes the tooth so the crown has space. An impression or digital scan is then used to create the crown. The patient may leave with a crown while the permanent one is being made. I always show the crown to the patient before leaving.

Choosing the Right Crown

The dentist may discuss porcelain-based options, ceramic crowns or metal-based choices depending on where the tooth sits and how force it takes. The best choice is not automatically the expensive one. I discuss options openly with my patients.

• A looking ceramic crown makes sense for a visible tooth especially when matching the shade matters.

• For an used back tooth strength deserves serious attention even if nobody sees the crown when the patient smiles.

After Your Root Canal Crown

Once the permanent crown is fitted, give the mouth a time to adjust. The bite should feel comfortable. If the tooth feels too high when the patient closes teeth tell the dentist than hoping the patient will simply get used to it. I have seen patients who wait for a days to adjust.

Keep brushing and cleaning around the crown. Crowns do not make the gumline immune to plaque and the tooth underneath still matters. I always advise patients to keep cleaning around the crown.

Dental Implant Services in Popular Locations

Dental Implants in Isleworth Dental Implants in Brentford Dental Implants in Ealing Dental Implants in Feltham Dental Implants in Hounslow Dental Implants in Richmond Dental Implants in Southall Dental Implants in Twickenham

Why a Root Canal Tooth Often Needs a Crown After a root canal the inside of the tooth has been.
