How Long Does It Take to Take Out Wisdom Teeth?

Most people expect wisdom tooth removal to take forever. It usually doesn’t. The actual procedure is often much shorter than the time you spend checking in, talking with the dentist, and waiting for the numbness to wear off. That’s the part people rarely expect.

The Procedure Is Usually Faster Than You Think

If you’re having one wisdom tooth removed and it’s fully visible, the dentist may finish in about 20 minutes. Sometimes even less. But if all four wisdom teeth need to come out, especially if they’re stuck under the gums, you’re probably looking at 45 minutes to an hour. Every mouth is different, so there isn’t one perfect number.

Because impacted wisdom teeth take more work, they naturally need extra time. The dentist has to make a small opening in the gum. In some cases the tooth is divided into smaller pieces before it’s removed. Oddly enough, that often makes the process smoother instead of harder.

Don’t Forget the Appointment Time

The appointment itself is longer than the surgery. You’ll spend time filling out forms if needed. Then the dentist checks everything one last time and explains what happens next. After the procedure you’ll stay for a short while, especially if you’ve had sedation. So even if the tooth comes out quickly, plan for around two hours from start to finish.

What Changes the Time?

A few things make a real difference.

• One tooth that’s already visible often comes out pretty quickly, which surprises a lot of people.

• Impacted teeth usually need more careful work. Nobody rushes that part, and they shouldn’t.

• Your choice of anesthesia matters too. Local anesthesia gets you home sooner. Sedation adds recovery time before you can leave.

• Some people have roots that are curved or sitting close to a nerve. That calls for a slower approach, and honestly I’d rather my dentist take an extra fifteen minutes.

What Happens Right After?

Once the teeth are out, your body gets to work healing. You’ll bite down on gauze for a while to help control bleeding. The numb feeling usually sticks around for a couple of hours. Swelling often shows up later that day or the next morning.
