What Is a Wisdom Tooth?

A wisdom tooth is the last adult tooth to show up. Most people get one in each corner of the mouth, though plenty of people never grow all four. They usually appear somewhere between the late teens and the mid twenties. By then your other teeth have already settled in, which is where the trouble often starts.

The funny part is that our ancestors probably had a better use for them. They chewed rough food every day and their jaws were often a little bigger. Most of us don’t live like that now.

What happens when they come in?

Sometimes nothing. A wisdom tooth grows straight, lines up with the rest of your teeth and quietly does its job. You stop noticing it after a while.

But a lot of people aren’t that lucky. The tooth can push against the one beside it. It can stay partly trapped under the gums. It can even grow at an angle, which feels strange and sometimes hurts more than people expect because the pressure doesn’t really switch off.

Signs that deserve attention

• A sore jaw that keeps hanging around, even after you thought it would fade.

• Swollen gums near the back of your mouth. Food loves getting stuck there and that gets annoying fast.

• Bad breath, even if you’re brushing well. Sometimes the problem is hiding where the toothbrush barely reaches.

• Pain that comes and goes. That pattern tricks people into waiting longer than they should.

Does every wisdom tooth need to be removed?

No. I wish that old idea would disappear because it causes a lot of unnecessary worry. If the tooth is healthy and easy to clean, many dentists are happy to leave it alone. Watching it over time makes more sense than rushing into treatment.

On the other hand, a tooth that’s trapped or damaging the one next to it usually isn’t doing you any favors. Taking it out before it causes bigger problems often feels like the better choice. Waiting just because the pain stopped for a week isn’t a great plan.

Looking after wisdom teeth

If yours have come through normally, keep them clean. Spend a little more time brushing the very back of your mouth because that’s where people tend to rush. Floss if you can reach.
