What Is a Sinus Headache?

A sinus headache is the kind of pain that seems to settle right behind your eyes or across your forehead, then just hangs around. Sometimes your cheeks feel sore too. You bend over to tie your shoes and suddenly the pressure feels worse. That’s usually the clue people notice first.

What Actually Causes It?

• A stuffy nose that doesn’t seem interested in clearing up, even after a hot shower

• Some people also notice thick mucus, and it often looks yellow or green instead of clear

• Fever matters here. If you’re running one along with facial pain, it points more toward a sinus infection than an ordinary headache.

• Pain around your eyes or cheeks, especially when you lean forward because that little movement suddenly feels annoying

Not Every “Sinus Headache” Is One

Doctors usually look at the full picture instead of only the location of the pain. The extra symptoms matter. They fill in the parts that the headache alone can’t explain.

What Usually Helps

If the headache comes from a real sinus infection, treating the infection is what makes the difference. Drinking enough water feels better than people expect. Rest helps too. And if a doctor thinks bacteria are involved, they may prescribe antibiotics. They aren’t useful for every case though, which is why guessing at home isn’t my favorite approach.

Because allergies can also swell the nasal passages, managing those allergies often cuts down on the pressure before it turns into a miserable day. You stop noticing that heavy feeling across your face, and that’s a nice change.

Knowing When to Pay Attention

A headache that keeps coming back deserves a closer look, especially if you also have swelling around your eyes or a high fever. The same goes for pain that becomes intense instead of fading. Waiting it out just because it sounds like “only sinus pressure” isn’t always the smart move.
