How Is a Tooth Prepared for a Crown?
The Tooth Is Checked First
Before any drilling happens your dentist looks at the tooth. An X-ray is often done if there are worries about decay or the tooths roots. If the tooth is infected that has to be fixed
Sometimes a tooth has already had a root canal. In that case the dentist checks if there is strong tooth left to hold a crown. If too much of the tooth is gone more support might be needed.
Shaping the Tooth for the Crown
The dentist takes off a layer from the tooths outside. Some material is also removed from the chewing surface so there is room for the crown to fit properly.
The sides are shaped so the crown can go over the tooth and stay in place. The edges are also made smooth. A clean edge is important because the crown has to fit the tooth well near the gum.
Some things help with the shaping:
• The damage to the tooth is important because a broken tooth is handled differently than a tooth that’s mostly okay.
• The type of crown material matters too since some materials need space than others.
• Your bite is checked during the process especially if the tooth is getting a lot of chewing pressure.
• The position of the gums can affect the edge of the shaping and your dentist will try to keep the edge healthy as possible.
The Temporary Crown Goes On
Once the tooth is ready an impression or a digital scan is taken so the permanent crown can be made to fit the shape. A temporary crown is usually put on while you wait.
At the visit the temporary crown is taken off and the permanent one is checked for fit. Your dentist looks at how it sits around the tooth and how your teeth meet when you bite.
