Porcelain-Fused-to-Metal Crowns Explained

What Is a Porcelain-Fused-to-Metal Crown?

A Porcelain-Fused-to-Metal crown or PFM crown has two parts. The inner layer is made of metal. This metal gives the crown its strength. Over that metal a layer of porcelain is added. The porcelain gives the crown the shape and colour of a tooth.

The dentist starts by preparing the damaged tooth. This means removing some of the tooth so that the crown can fit over it properly. Then an impression or digital scan is taken. This helps make a crown that matches the size and shape of the tooth. Once the crown is ready the dentist checks how it fits before securing it in place with cement.

Why Put Metal Under Porcelain?

Porcelain looks great. It doesn’t handle chewing forces the same way metal does. The metal layer provides a base. That’s important for teeth that are used a lot like the molars in the back of the mouth.

Where PFM Crowns Work Well

PFM crowns work well for teeth. These teeth need strength because they do most of the chewing. They are not always visible. The appearance is less of a concern. PFM crowns are also a choice when a dentist wants a reliable long-tried restoration. These crowns have been used for years and are known for their durability.

PFM crowns can also be used after root canal treatment. When the tooth has had a root canal it’s usually more fragile. A PFM crown helps protect what’s left of the tooth. The choice depends on how much tooth structure remains and where the tooth is located in the mouth.

The Good and Not-So-Good Parts

• The metal underneath gives the crown strength. That makes PFM crowns good for teeth that need to handle chewing.

• The porcelain covering looks natural for people.. The final look depends on the shade and how much of the tooth shows when you smile.

• Sometimes a dark line can appear near the gum. This happens when the gum recedes over time. It’s a detail that some people notice, especially if the crown is in a front position.

• Metal allergies are rare. Still if you know you are sensitive to metals it’s important to tell your dentist. The type of metal used can affect you.

Are PFM Crowns Still a Good Choice?

Yes, especially if you need a crown for a back tooth and don’t mind using a tried-and-tested material. A made PFM crown can feel completely normal once you get used to it.

For a front tooth the appearance matters more. In that case a modern ceramic crown might be an option. These crowns don’t use metal. They often give a natural look especially with light passing through them.
