Why Does My Dental Crown Feel Loose?

What Makes a Dental Crown Feel Loose?

The common reason is that the cement holding the Dental Crown in place has weakened. Dental Crowns are bonded to the tooth underneath and that bond can eventually fail. The loose feeling of a Dental Crown does not always happen suddenly. One may first notice a movement while chewing.

Another possibility is damage underneath the Dental Crown. Decay can develop around the edge of the Dental Crown if bacteria get underneath the Dental Crown. The Dental Crown itself may still look perfectly normal from the outside, which makes the loose feeling a little confusing.

A Loose Crown Can Get

• A little movement when the patient bites is enough reason to get the Dental Crown checked even if there isn’t any pain.

• If the Dental Crown comes off completely keep the Dental Crown clean and do not try to glue the Dental Crown back yourself. Household glue has no business anywhere near a tooth.

• Pain underneath the Dental Crown is more concerning particularly if the tooth has recently had a root canal or was already weakened.

What Should You Do If Your Crown Feels Loose?

Try not to chew on that side until the Dental Crown has been checked. Soft foods are a short‑term choice because they put less pressure on the Dental Crown. The patient does not need to panic though.

Can a Loose Crown Be Fixed?

Often yes. If the Dental Crown is intact and the tooth underneath is healthy the dentist may be able to remove the Dental Crown clean the area and secure the Dental Crown again. If the Dental Crown itself is damaged or the tooth underneath has developed decay the treatment is different.

Don’t Ignore That Wobbly Feeling

A Dental Crown should eventually feel like part of your tooth. The patient should not be constantly aware of the Dental Crown moving. If the Dental Crown feels loose especially if the movement is getting more noticeable the patient should have a dentist examine the Dental Crown soon.
