Why Does My Dental Crown Feel Tight?

Why Does a New Crown Feel Tight?

Sometimes the crown just feels tight because the tooth and the gum around it are still adjusting after the work. The area might also feel a sore, especially in the first few days.

Your bite is very important too. If the crown is a little higher than it should be your teeth might hit it before the others do. This can cause an uncomfortable feeling when you chew. It doesn’t mean the crown is loose or not well made. It might just need a change.

Your Gum May Be Part of It

• A tight feeling around the tooth especially when you first wake up.

• A bit of pressure when you bite which usually gets easier as your mouth gets used to the crown.

• A sore gum near the crown but if the swelling doesn’t go away that’s something to take seriously.

When Should a Tight Crown Be Checked?

If the crown still feels tight after a days especially when you bite down it’s a good idea to see your dentist. A small change can make a difference.

Sharp pain is different from being aware of the crown. So is pain that gets worse. If you have sensitivity to hot or cold swelling near the tooth or pain that keeps you awake call your dentist instead of waiting for it to go away.

Don’t Try to Fix the Crown Yourself

This is one situation where trying to fix it at home is not an idea. Don’t try to file the crown or keep eating foods to test it.

Your dentist can check how the crown fits with the teeth and make a careful adjustment if needed. I would rather have it done the way than spend days convincing myself the bite feels okay.

So How Tight Is Too Tight?

If the crown feels tight. You’re chewing normally and the feeling is getting better give your mouth some time to adjust.

If every bite feels heavy on that tooth or the pressure doesn’t get better don’t just accept it. A crown should fit into your bite not be something you always notice.
