Exercising After Dental Crown Placement: When Can You Work Out?

Why It’s Better to Take a Short Break

Exercise elevates your heart rate and blood pressure. Both of those are things you don’t need to be doing for extra after having a crown placed, especially if your dentist had to do any additional work to the tooth to prepare it for the crown.

There’s also the issue of numbness. If you’re numb, you could bite your cheek or tongue and not realize it. You don’t want to find out the hard way in the middle of a set of squats.

When Can You Go Back to the Gym?

As long as you’re feeling okay the next day and your dentist hasn’t said otherwise, you should be able to go back to the gym. Just try to keep things on the lighter side until you know how the tooth is reacting.

That way, if you feel something wrong while working out, you can stop and assess the situation. You shouldn’t push through dental pain just to prove a point.

What About Heavy Lifting?

• Try to keep the first workout light, especially if you find yourself clenching your jaw during hard sets.

• Running tends to be a good way to test how the tooth feels, too, since you’re not gripping anything or tensing your whole body (though a pounding tooth is still a good reason to stop).

• If you only have a temporary crown, I would be a little more conservative about getting back to heavy lifting, since those aren’t meant to last through the process.

If you feel sudden pain in the tooth while working out, cut the session short; don’t test it out every few minutes to see if it gets better.

Listen to What the Tooth Is Telling You

Some sensitivity is normal, but if the tooth starts to hurt severely or you feel like it’s coming loose, give your dentist a call. Don’t push yourself through those kinds of issues.
