Does Location Affect Dental Crown Cost?

Why Your City Can Change the Price

I have noticed that a dentist who works in a high-cost area usually has business expenses. Those higher expenses usually appear in treatment fees. A clinic located in a central neighborhood may pay far more for its space than a clinic a little farther out and that higher cost has to go somewhere.

Then there is the market. If many people are looking for dental work in an area clinic may charge more for certain treatments. That does not mean the dentist is doing anything. The economics are simply different.

The Clinic Matters

• A central city clinic, especially one that has higher overhead often has higher treatment fees. That part is pretty straightforward.

• Lab fees matter because the crown has to be made and a custom job can push the final price upward.

• Insurance or dental coverage if you have it changes your out-of-pocket cost even though the dentist’s listed fee stays the same.

• Materials matter too. A basic crown and a premium ceramic option are not priced the same even before location enters the picture.

The Crown Isn’t the Bill

This is where people sometimes get caught out. They search for the price of a crown see a number and assume that is what they will pay.. The crown itself may only be one part of the treatment.

Your dentist might need to treat decay. Maybe the tooth needs a root canal. Perhaps there is not healthy tooth left to support the crown without additional work. So a quote that looks cheap at first can become much higher once the actual condition of the tooth is included.

Should You Travel for a Crown?

Dental crowns usually involve than one step. You may need an examination first then preparation, a fitting. If something feels wrong afterward being close to the dentist is suddenly worth a lot more than it seemed on the price comparison page.

Still comparing areas makes sense. If one neighborhood is more expensive checking clinics a short distance away can uncover a better price without turning your dental treatment into a road trip.

• A clinic outside a pricey business district may have lower overhead, which can show up in its fees.

• Traveling hours for a small saving? Probably not worth the hassle once follow-up visits enter the picture.

What Should You Compare?

Don’t compare crown prices by location. Ask what the quoted price actually covers. That one question clears up an amount of confusion.

Look at the crown material being offered. Ask whether the examination is included. Find out if scans or temporary work cost extra.. Make sure you understand whether any treatment needed before the crown is part of the estimate.

Importantly compare like with like. A ceramic crown from one clinic shouldn’t be compared with a type of crown from another and treated as though they are identical.
