Permanent Dental Crowns Post-Treatment Checklist

Check Your Bite

Bite down gently after the crown has been fitted. The crown should feel comfortable and fairly even. If the crowned tooth touches first or feels too high tell your dentist. A small adjustment can make a difference and there is no benefit in tolerating an uncomfortable bite.

Keep an Eye on Sensitivity

Some sensitivity after treatment is not unusual especially if the tooth had a lot of work done before the crown was placed. The sensitivity should settle than keep getting worse.

• Mild sensitivity at first is usually manageable especially if it fades as the days pass.

• Sharp pain when you bite deserves attention. Do not keep testing the tooth every minutes because that becomes annoying quickly and does not provide useful information.

• Gum soreness around the crown can happen,. Swelling that persists needs a dental check.

Protect the Crown While It Settles

You can usually eat normally once your dentist says the crown is ready for use. Start gently if the tooth feels unfamiliar. The bite needs a time to stop feeling as if there is something new in the mouth.

Be sensible with hard foods. Crunching directly on something hard with a newly fitted crown is a poor experiment especially if you already know you grind or clench your teeth.

Your Daily Routine

Brush the crown like your other teeth. Clean around the gum line carefully because plaque can still build up there.. Floss between the crowned tooth and its neighbour without being rough.

Watch for Problems

A permanent crown should feel secure. If it becomes loose cracks, shifts or suddenly feels different contact your practice. Do not try to fix it yourself with household glue. That is obvious. People do strange things when a dental appointment is not convenient.

• A loose crown needs a dentists attention than a DIY repair.

• swelling or persistent pain around the tooth shouldn’t be ignored, even if the crown looks perfectly normal.

Give It Time

Your mouth may need days to adjust fully. That is normal. What matters is the direction things are going.

If the crown gradually feels more natural you are probably settling into it. If discomfort stays the same. Becomes stronger get it checked. A permanent crown should eventually become boring which is actually a good outcome for dental work.
