Ceramic Dental Crowns: What to Expect
Your First Appointment
Your dentist will check the tooth before deciding if a crown is the right fit. They may take an X-ray because the part you can’t see matters too. If the tooth has deep decay or an infection, that needs attention before the crown goes on.
The tooth is then shaped to make room for the ceramic crown. Don’t panic at this bit. Local anaesthetic keeps the area numb, so you shouldn’t feel the drilling itself.
Getting the Crown Made
After shaping the tooth, your dentist takes an impression or a digital scan. That information goes to the dental laboratory, where the crown is made to match the size and shade of your other teeth.
A temporary crown can feel slightly strange at first. Your bite may feel different too. Give it a little time rather than constantly checking it with your tongue, which is something almost everyone does anyway.
When the Ceramic Crown Goes On
This is the appointment where things start to feel properly normal again.
Your dentist may make tiny adjustments if your bite feels too high. That’s worth speaking up about. A crown shouldn’t leave you feeling like one tooth hits before everything else.
Eating and Looking After It
• A little sensitivity at first is common, especially with cold drinks, and it usually becomes less noticeable.
• Sticky foods deserve some caution while you’re wearing a temporary crown. Losing that temporary crown is a needless nuisance.
• Brush around the crowned tooth normally. The gum around it still needs proper cleaning.
• Your bite should feel comfortable, though a tiny adjustment can make a big difference if the crown feels high.
Ceramic crowns aren’t something you should have to think about every time you eat. Once the tooth settles and the crown feels right, it should mostly get out of your way.
