Root Canal Crowns Care Tips That Actually Matter

Be Gentle With Your New Crown

Avoid chewing on the side of your mouth where the crown is placed, for the first few days. You do not want to traumatize the area since your mouth is still adjusting to the new restoration.

Brush Twice a Day

Use a soft bristled brush and brush around the crown and along the gum line. Do not apply too much pressure since the crowned tooth has already undergone root canal therapy. This means extra pressure will not help in cleaning it.

Brushing is important but flossing should also be done. Slide the floss material against the side of the crown instead of snapping it against the gum. Ask your dentist for an alternative flossing material if you are not comfortable with the dental floss. The main reason for flossing is to keep the area clean and free from bacteria.

Do Not Use the Crown to Bite Hard Objects

Although a crowned tooth is tough, it is best to avoid using it to bite really hard objects. The crown is durable but it is not unbreakable.

Things to avoid when having a crown include:

• Ice avoid chewing it even if you have a crown because it can still crack.

• Sticky food exercise caution when eating sticky food especially when you are still adjusting to the crown.

• If you have a bad habit of clenching or grinding your teeth at night, you should consult your dentist about using a nightguard. This is a better option compared to repairing a cracked crown. Clenching can put a lot of pressure on the crown which can compromise its integrity.

Monitor the Crown and the Tooth It Is Placed On

The crowned tooth underwent root canal therapy which means the innermost part of the tooth has been dealt with. The crown itself serves as the protector of the tooth and in order to prolong its usefulness, you have to take care of it.

The next thing that you should know about caring for crowned teeth is monitoring. See your dentist if:

• You feel that the crown is high  this usually happens when you bite and feel discomfort so visiting the dentist is necessary.

• There is a sudden increase in the degree of swelling or discomfort. Instead of waiting for these symptoms to dissipate on their own, it is better to just visit your dentist and have it checked.

• The crown becomes dislodged make sure to bring it along with you when visiting the dentist

Do Not Skip Dental Check Ups

It is really important that you continue to visit the dentist even if you have a crown. The dentist will be able to check the crown as well as the surrounding gum tissue.

In addition to this, the dentist will also be looking out for any form of decay that may have occurred on the adjacent teeth for the crown. It is important to remember that a crown is only a restoration and that it does not prevent decay

Continue to take care of your crowned teeth by brushing and flossing on a regular basis. Keep the crown from being subjected to unnecessary trauma and take note of any changes that could signal a problem.
