Brushing After Dental Crown Placement
When Can You Brush After a Crown?
You can generally brush your teeth as normal once your dentist says it is safe. The numbness has worn off. If a temporary crown was fitted be more careful because crown is not bonded in the same way as the permanent crown.
The First Night
A bristled toothbrush is the way to go. Use pressure around the new crown rather than attacking crown like you are trying to remove a stain from a bathroom tile. The crown is designed to handle brushing. Your irritated gum is the part that needs a kindness.
How Should You Brush Around the Crown?
Angle the toothbrush toward the gumline. Make small gentle movements. Spend time around the edge of the crown because crown is where plaque tends to collect. You do not need pressure to get the job done.
• Soft bristles are the choice especially if your gums feel tender after the appointment.
• Around the crown edge slow down a little. That small pause makes it easier to clean without irritating the gum.
• Electric toothbrush users can carry on using one although I would keep the pressure setting gentle for the few days.
Can Brushing Damage a New Crown?
Normal brushing will not damage a fitted permanent crown. Crowns are made to withstand chewing and cleaning so you do not need to baby them forever.
That is probably the approach. Be gentle. Do not become afraid of cleaning the crown.
What If Brushing Hurts?
Some tenderness around the gum is common after crown placement particularly if the dentist had to work to the gumline. Keep brushing rather than avoiding the area completely. Avoiding crown lets plaque build up which is what you do not want.
But sharp pain when you bite deserves attention especially if it does not settle. The crown may need a bite adjustment or your dentist may want to check the tooth itself.
