Can I Drink Water After Tooth Surgery?

When Can I Drink Water After Surgery?

If your dentist hasn’t given you instructions you can usually have small sips of water once you are fully awake after the surgery. If your mouth is still numb take it slow. You don’t want to bite your cheek or burn yourself with a drink because you might not feel the area properly.

Cold or room-temperature water is usually the choice. Hot drinks should be avoided right after surgery because heat can increase bleeding around the treated area.

The First Few Hours Matter

The first few hours after surgery need care. Sip water of drinking quickly. Do not rinse your mouth forcefully. And avoid checking the surgical site with your tongue this habit is very tempting but can damage the healing wound.

What Should You Avoid Drinking?

• Plain water is usually the option, especially when your mouth feels dry.

• A cold drink may feel soothing. Do not keep ice-cold water pressed against the wound for too long.

• Straws are a no. Avoid using them because the suction can disturb the blood clot.

• Alcohol should wait, especially if you’re taking pain medicine or antibiotics.

When to Call Your Dentist

Contact your dentist or oral surgeon if bleeding does not stop after following the instructions. Also call if the pain gets much worse after starting to improve if swelling continues to grow or if anything feels seriously wrong.

Remember if your dentist gave you specific instructions because you had an extraction, implant, bone graft or another type of surgery follow those exactly. They know what was done and what your recovery needs.
