Dental Crown Fitting: What to Expect

Your First Crown Appointment

Before anything begins your dentist will examine the tooth and the surrounding area. They might take an X-ray to get a view of what’s going on beneath the surface. If the tooth needs care before the crown can be placed that treatment is done first.

Then comes the part most people think of when they hear “crown.” Your dentist will numb the area using anaesthetic. Once the numbness sets in they reshape the tooth so there’s space for the crown to fit over it without making your bite feel off.

The Tooth Gets Prepared

This step might sound a little uncomfortable. The numbing makes it much easier to handle. You might feel pressure or vibration from the tools. You shouldn’t feel sharp pain. If you do feel pain speak up. There’s no need to suffer silently during your appointment.

Next your dentist takes an impression or a digital scan of your teeth. That way the crown can be custom-made to match the shape of your tooth and how you bite. While the permanent crown is being made a temporary crown is placed to protect the tooth.

Between Appointments

– Sticky foods can be a problem especially if you chew on that side without thinking about it.

– Some sensitivity after the tooth is prepared is normal.. If the pain is strong or lasts more than a few days call your dentist.

– Flossing still matters. Gently slide the floss out through the side of snapping it up. That helps protect the crown.

Getting the Permanent Crown Fitted

– The crown should fit snugly around the tooth with no gap where it meets the gum.

– Your bite should feel natural. If one tooth hits first let your dentist know before the crown is cemented.

Once everything looks good the crown is securely bonded to the tooth with cement. Your dentist cleans away any cement around the edges. Then you’re asked to bite down to make sure the fit is just right.

What It Feels Like Afterward

Your mouth might feel strange for a hours because of the numbing. Once the numbness wears off the crowned tooth might feel a little sensitive, especially to cold. That usually goes away after a time.

If the crown still feels too high even after you’ve had time to adjust contact your dentist. It’s not something you have to live with. A quick bite adjustment can fix it easily.
