Dental Crown Maintenance Pre-Treatment Checklist

Start With the Tooth Itself

Before any crown is placed the dentist must understand what is happening inside the damaged tooth. First decay must be removed. If an infection is present it must be treated well.

If the tooth has already had a root canal the dentist will verify that it is healing correctly before deciding on a crown. Placing a crown over a problem does not solve the problem.

Your First Appointment Checklist

Spend a minutes before the visit and note any changes you have noticed. Does the tooth hurt when you bite? Are drinks painful? Even a minor difference should be mentioned, because it provides the dentist with information before treatment starts.

• If you feel pain especially when biting or chewing mention it of saying “it is probably fine.”

• If there is a filling on the tooth let them know because the condition of the filling determines how much healthy tooth remains.

• If the tooth has been treated in the past discuss the history. You do not need to recall every detail.

Get Your Mouth Ready

The dentist prefers the area around the crown to be healthy. Gum inflammation can make fitting difficult and poor oral hygiene allows plaque to build up around the crown.

So brush daily before the visit. Floss between teeth too. Avoid scrubbing your gums the night before just because you recall a dentist appointment. That is not preparation; it is panic.

Ask About What Happens After

• If a temporary crown is used it needs care because it is not a permanent solution.

• Continue your brushing routine. There is no reason to stop cleaning around the crowned tooth.

• If you grind your teeth at night tell the dentist. They may recommend protection because repeated heavy pressure can damage crowns.
