Dental Crown Repair Pre-Treatment Checklist
Check What Happened to the Crown
Start with the obvious. Has the crown come loose cracked, chipped or just started feeling different? Tell your dentist what you noticed and when it began. Even a small change matters because the repair depends on what has happened
Bring the Crown If It Came Off
If the whole crown has fallen out keep it clean and safe. Take it to your appointment. Don’t scrub it. Try to reshape it. The dentist needs to see how it looks before deciding if it can go on.
Get the Tooth Ready for Examination
Mention any pain or sensitivity you have noticed. Also say if the tooth hurts when you bite down. These details give the dentist an idea of whats happening below the surface.
• Any swelling around the tooth deserves a mention even if it seems minor.
• Pain when biting can point to a problem that needs more than a crown repair.
• If the crown has been moving for days say so. The timing matters.
Talk Through Your History
Your dentist should know why the original crown was placed and roughly how long you’ve had it. If you’ve had root canal treatment on that tooth mention it. Old dental records can also be useful if you’re seeing a dentist.
Because repair isn’t always the same as replacement. If the crown itself is fine but the cement has failed the dentist may be able to secure it. If the crown or tooth is badly damaged another approach makes sense.
Ask What Happens Before Repair
Don’t be shy about asking what the dentist needs to check. An X-ray might be recommended if theres concern about the tooth underneath. The dentist may also check your bite and the way the crown fits.
Bring any dental records if you have them. Then leave the rest to the dentist. The goal isn’t to arrive knowing exactly what’s wrong. It’s to arrive with the details already sorted.
