Dental Crown Repair: What to Expect

Your First Appointment

Expect the dentist to look closely at the crown and the tooth beneath it. They will ask when you noticed the problem and whether you have had pain or sensitivity. An X-ray may be needed if the condition of the tooth underneath is not clear.

Don’t be surprised if the dentist spends more time checking the bite than you expected. A crown can look perfectly fine while hitting the tooth too hard which may explain why it keeps getting damaged.

What the Dentist Checks

• A small. Crack, especially if the rest of the crown still feels solid.

• The fit around the gum because a loose edge deserves attention than another week of hoping it settles down.

• Tooth underneath the crown. Decay or damage changes the repair plan.

• Your bite with a simple checks while you close your teeth together.

What Crown Repair Feels Like

If the damage is minor the dentist may smooth the area or use a tooth-colored material to rebuild part of the crown. The process is usually fairly straightforward. You may feel pressure while the dentist works. You should not feel sharp pain.

Some repairs are finished in one appointment. That is the part. You walk out eat once you have been given the go-ahead and after a while you stop noticing the repaired area altogether.

When Replacement Is Needed

If the crown is cracked through or no longer fits properly repairing the damage will not solve the real issue. Your dentist may recommend removing the crown and making a new one. If the tooth underneath needs treatment first that has to happen before the replacement crown is fitted.

After the Repair

Your tooth may feel slightly different for a while particularly if the dentist adjusted your bite. That is usually easy to get used to.

You should still brush normally. Clean around the crown carefully. Avoid biting hard foods with a freshly repaired crown until your dentist says it is ready for normal use.

When to Call the Dentist Again

A little tenderness can happen after treatment. Persistent pain is not something to ignore. The same goes for a crown that feels loose or changes your bite noticeably.
