Dental Crown Replacement Post-Treatment Checklist
Check How Your Bite Feels
Your first job is simple. Pay attention when you close your teeth together. The crown shouldn’t feel like it hits before everything else. If it does, or you feel pressure every time you bite down, tell your dentist rather than hoping your mouth will magically adjust.
A slightly odd feeling during the first day or two is common. But persistent pain when chewing deserves attention. A small adjustment can often make a big difference, and personally, I’d rather get a high spot fixed than spend two weeks chewing on the other side.
Keep Eating Sensible
• Soft food at first, mostly because biting your cheek while numb is an annoyingly easy mistake.
• Very sticky sweets are better left alone for now. They can put unnecessary pulling pressure on a newly fitted crown.
• If cold or hot drinks cause sensitivity, notice how long it lasts rather than panicking over one quick twinge.
Look After the Crown at Home
Brush normally, but be gentle around the gumline. Your crown still needs the same basic cleaning as a natural tooth because plaque can build around its edges, where the crown meets your gum.
Flossing matters too. Slide the floss down carefully rather than snapping it against the gum. If you’re using a floss threader or another cleaning aid, use it the way your dental team showed you.
Your Quick Warning Check
• A crown that moves when you touch it, even slightly.
• Pain that sticks around or gets worse instead of settling.
• Swelling near the tooth, particularly if it comes with increasing soreness.
Don’t Skip the Follow-Up
If your dentist has booked a review, keep it. They can check the crown’s fit and make sure your bite is comfortable. Even when everything feels fine, that appointment gives them a chance to spot a small issue before it becomes an irritating one.
Also, keep your usual dental check-ups. A crown can protect a damaged tooth, but it doesn’t make the surrounding gum or tooth completely maintenance-free.
