Dental Crown Sensitivity Treatment Timeline

The Few Days After a Crown

During the first 24 to 48 hours cold drinks or hot food can cause a sharp feeling around the crowned tooth. Biting down can feel a little strange too especially if the tooth was changed a lot before the crown was put on.

Your dentist might suggest using a toothpaste that’s good for sensitive teeth and advise staying away from very hot or very cold foods for a little while. It is an idea to brush gently. Scrubbing harder because the tooth feels different is not an idea.

What Should Happen During Week One

By about day three to seven normal sensitivity should start to become less obvious. You might still feel something with ice- water but it should not stay after that.

A good sign is simple. The discomfort is getting shorter and not as strong.

What Happens During Weeks Two to Four

• A short cold feeling that goes away quickly is usually a sign especially if each day feels a little better.

• Pain that stays after the cold or hot food is gone needs attention especially if it happens again and again.

• Biting feels wrong? The crown could be sitting a high, which is an easy problem for a dentist to check and fix.

• Pain at night that comes without eating or drinking is something to take seriously even if the crown is new.

When Treatment Takes Longer

Sometimes sensitivity does not follow the one-to-two-week pattern that people expect. If the tooth had a filling before the crown or already had a nerve that was irritated healing can take longer.

Sometimes the crown is not the main issue. Decay under the crown, a tooth, gum irritation or a problem with the tooths nerve can cause ongoing discomfort. The treatment time then depends on what the dentist finds.

When Should You Call Your Dentist?

Give sensitivity some time but do not try to live with pain that is getting worse. A crown should eventually feel like part of the bite. You should not have to think about it every time you eat.

Call your dentist sooner if the tooth hurts when you bite sensitivity lasts a time after eating, swelling happens or the pain starts without a clear reason. Those signs need a checkup of another tube of sensitive toothpaste.

So How Long Should Crown Sensitivity Last?

Mild sensitivity often goes away in a days while some teeth need a few weeks to fully settle down. The direction is more important than the number of days. Better is better.
