Dental Crown Sensitivity: What to Expect

Why Your Tooth Feels Sensitive After a Crown

The process of preparing a tooth for a crown involves removing some enamel and reshaping the tooth so that the crown will fit correctly. This work can temporarily irritate the inside of the tooth. Your dentist may also use tools that apply pressure or vibration to the area.

Then there is the temporary crown if you have one. That temporary crown may not feel like the final crown. As a result the bite of your mouth can feel off while you are wearing the temporary crown.

What Normal Crown Sensitivity Feels Like

• A twinge when you eat cold food especially during the first few days is normal.

• Pressure when you bite may feel slightly odd while the tooth and the bite are settling, especially if the crown is new.

• Some tenderness around the gum is expected because the area has been handled during treatment. The tenderness should not keep getting worse.

• A dull feeling that fades between meals is generally less worrying than pain that keeps hanging

When Sensitivity Needs a Check

Sometimes the tooth is not simply adjusting. If pain becomes stronger of settling down that is worth getting checked.

A crown that feels too high can put pressure on the tooth every time you bite. You may notice this most when chewing than when drinking something cold. A dentist can check the bite. Make a small adjustment if needed.

How Long Should Crown Sensitivity Last?

There is not one timetable for every tooth. A treated tooth can need more time to settle especially if it had a large filling or deeper decay before the crown was placed.

If sensitivity is still strong after the expected healing period. It keeps returning instead of fading book a dental review. Waiting indefinitely is not a badge of patience.
