How to Prevent Plaque Around a Dental Crown
Brush the Crown Like a Natural Tooth
Your crown does not require any special cleaning. Simply use a soft toothbrush and fluoride toothpaste to thoroughly brush your teeth twice a day. Pay special attention to the edge of your crown as plaque tends to accumulate there.
Avoid using too much pressure as a way to achieve a deeper clean. Not only is it ineffective, but it can also damage your gums.
Floss Around the Crown Daily
This is important since your toothbrush will not be able to effectively clean the space between your crown and neighbouring teeth. Gently thread the floss between your teeth and along the side of your crown. Make sure to move it up and down along the gum line.
Avoid snapping the floss up and down as it can cause irritation.
If flossing feels like a bother, consider getting a water flosser which can reach hard to clean areas without having to make a huge effort.
Prevent the Formation of Plaque
• Rinse your mouth with water after every meal to remove any food particles that may have gotten stuck in your crown. This is especially important if you are not at a location where brushing your teeth is an option.
• Floss at least once a day. I personally prefer to do it at night since it ensures that my teeth are clean before going to sleep.
• Using a soft toothbrush is sufficient. Avoid brushing too hard especially around your crown.
• If your gums keep bleeding around the place of your crown, avoid brushing and flossing too hard. There may be another cause for it.
Have it Professionally Cleaned at Least Once a Year
Even though your crown requires minimal cleaning, it still needs to be done on a regular basis. A professional cleaning ensures that plaque and tartar are properly removed from your crown.
Your dentist will also be able to check for any irritated spots along the gum line that may require treatment. The dentist can also make sure that your crown fits snugly against your tooth and that there are no foreign objects irritating your gums.
Your crown should not be particularly bothersome so long as you keep it properly cleaned. Maintaining a clean crown hardly requires any extra effort aside from the usual teeth cleaning routine. It will quickly become one of those unthinking rituals that you barely have to think about.
