Porcelain Dental Crowns Pre-Treatment Checklist
Check That Your Tooth Is Ready
A crown is not usually the step if the tooth has a problem that has not been treated. Your dentist needs to make sure the tooth is strong enough to hold a crown and that the gums around it are healthy enough for the treatment.
If you are having a toothache, swelling, bleeding gums or sensitivity that has gotten worse suddenly tell your dentist before the treatment starts. Do not silently hope it will go away after the crown is placed. The problem underneath is still important.
Your Dental Examination
• Any pain you are having should be mentioned, even if it only happens when you eat something
• Gum health is important too. Swollen gums can make it harder to fit the crown properly. It is usually better to fix that first.
Talk About the Crown Beforehand
Porcelain crowns look natural which is one of the reasons people choose them.. Looking natural does not mean your dentist just picks a random shade and starts.
Discuss the color you want. If the crown will be next to your teeth this discussion is even more important because small differences can be very noticeable.
Don’t Skip the Important Questions
• Tell your dentist about any medicines you usually take anything that affects bleeding before the treatment starts, not halfway through the appointment.
• If you are nervous about the treatment say so. There is no prize for pretending you are completely fine.
• What you eat before? Follow the instructions your dentist gives you especially if sedation is planned. Otherwise do not make up your rules about fasting.
Get Your Home Routine Ready
Before the treatment make sure your usual way of brushing and cleaning your teeth is somewhat regular. You do not need to become the most excited flosser. Just keep your mouth clean.
It is also an idea to have softer foods nearby for the first day if your dentist thinks your tooth or gums might feel sore. You might not need them. Having them ready is easier than deciding what to eat when your mouth feels strange.
