Temporary Dental Crowns Before and After Treatment

Before You Get a Crown

Before the temporary crown goes on your dentist must prepare the tooth. This usually involves removing damaged tooth structure and shaping the remaining tooth so the temporary crown can sit properly. If the tooth has already had root canal treatment the preparation process may look slightly different.

What Your Tooth Looks Like Before

Before treatment the tooth may appear chipped, broken, discoloured or noticeably smaller than surrounding teeth. Sometimes the damage is not easy to see. The problem may show up as pain when you bite or sensitivity to cold.

During Temporary Crown Treatment

The temporary crown is usually fitted during the appointment as tooth preparation. Your dentist checks how the temporary crown sits and makes adjustments so your bite feels comfortable.

A temporary crown is designed to protect the tooth until the permanent crown is ready. It also helps you chew normally and keeps the prepared tooth covered during the waiting period.

The Few Days After

Mild sensitivity, especially around cold drinks is not unusual after preparation though it should not keep getting worse.

  • Sticky foods deserve caution because they can loosen a crown and nobody wants to discover that while eating toffee.
  • Keep brushing around the crown but be gentle when cleaning near the gumline.
  • If the temporary crown becomes loose or falls out contact your dentist than trying to glue it back yourself.

After the Permanent Crown Is Fitted

The biggest change comes when the temporary crown is removed and the permanent crown is placed. Your dentist checks the fit first. They also examine your bite before securing the crown.

Some mild sensitivity can happen after the final crown is fitted. Give your mouth a time to settle.. Persistent pain, a crown that feels too high or a loose crown needs attention.
