Temporary Dental Crowns Treatment Timeline

Pain That Doesn’t Settle

Some sensitivity after getting a crown is normal. This is especially true when the tooth has just been filed down. The discomfort should get better over time. It should not get worse. If the pain increases it is worth paying attention to.

A sharp pain when you bite is something to mention to your dentist. The crown might be sitting high. When the crown is too high the tooth takes pressure than it should. This can cause pain every time you chew. A dull ache that keeps coming back also needs checking. It could be a sign that something’s not right.

A Loose or Moving Crown

A temporary crown should stay in place. It should not move when you touch it with your tongue. If you notice movement do not keep pushing the crown into position. This can damage the fit. Make things worse. Temporary cement is meant to hold the crown for a time. Once the seal is broken the tooth can become sensitive. Contact your dentist away instead.

Gaps Around the Crown

Food getting trapped around one edge is not normal. A small amount of food contact can happen.. A clear gap or a rough edge is different. You should not have to deal with this. You might also notice your tongue keeps finding the sharp spot. That is not something you need to live with. Make sure your dentist knows about it.

Changes You Can Feel

• A visible crack or chip in the crown. Especially if the edge feels sharp against your tongue.

• Increasing sensitivity to hot or cold. This is a concern if the sensitivity lasts even after the drink is gone.

• An taste near the crown. This keeps coming. It is not something that goes away with mouthwash.

• Swelling around the gum. Even if the crown looks fine the gum tissue may be telling you something.

• The crown feels unusually high. You notice it every time you close your teeth.

When the Gum Looks Unhappy

Mild gum tenderness can happen after a crown is fitted. Your mouth has just been worked on. That’s normal.. If the gum keeps bleeding, swelling or feeling sore that is not normal. This should not get worse. It should get better. If the issue keeps growing it needs attention. That is the part people sometimes miss. You do not have to wait until it becomes unbearable.

Don’t Just Put Up With It

A temporary crown is temporary. That does not mean problems with it are temporary too. If the pain gets worse each day if the crown moves or falls out if there is a crack or if the gum swells contact your dentist. If you have pain or significant swelling in your face seek urgent dental care.
